| Obverse description | Forepart of a winged lion (griffin-lion) in the archaic style, depicted in a crouching or lunging posture facing left, with a prominently rendered folded wing rising above its back and its head lowered toward a tunny fish set horizontally in the lower field. The tunny fish, a characteristic symbol of Kyzikos, serves as the principal identifying device of this mint. The relief is bold and finely modelled within a plain, slightly raised border, set against a smooth electrum field. The rendering is characteristic of the accomplished Archaic engraving tradition of Mysia, circa 550–450 BC. |
