Reverse description A bold, plain cross pattée divides the reverse field into four quarters, with two fleurs-de-lis placed in the upper-left and lower-right angles and two passant guardant leopards (lions of England) occupying the upper-right and lower-left angles, arranged in heraldic alternation. The design reflects the dual claim of the English crown to France and Aquitaine. A continuous uncial legend runs along the outer border, separated from the central motif by a beaded inner circle.
