Obverse description Half-length crowned effigy of King Francis I facing, depicted in regal attire and holding a sword in his right hand and a fleur-de-lis scepter in his left. The figure is rendered in a bold, Gothic hammered style characteristic of mid-16th-century French billon coinage. The royal bust is set within a beaded or plain inner circle, with the abbreviated Latin legend disposed around the periphery. The crude, irregular flan typical of hammered manufacture results in partial legend visible on surviving examples.
Obverse script Latin (uncial)

Reverse description A plain cross divides the reverse field into four quarters, each containing alternating fleurs-de-lis and crowned Gothic letter F, the royal cipher of Francis I. The design is enclosed within a beaded or plain inner circle, with the Christus vincit devotional legend running around the periphery in Latin uncial script. The execution is characteristic of hammered billon coinage, with the cross boldly struck at center and the cantons clearly defined despite the irregularity of the flan. The mint mark T for Turin appears in the legend or field.
