Obverse description Half-length facing effigy of Edward of Woodstock (the Black Prince), crowned and robed, depicted frontally in Gothic style within the coin's field. The prince holds a sceptre or staff in his right hand, with drapery visible across the lower body. The figure is rendered in low relief with characteristic medieval stylization, occupying the majority of the flan. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the effigy, separated from the central design by an inner beaded border.
