Obverse description Central device depicts a phoenix rising from flames with wings spread wide, rendered in bold relief. The circular legend reads J.M.L. & W.H. SCOVILL around the upper periphery and WATERBURY CON. around the lower, with the date 1837 in the exergue below the device. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded rim, with small oak leaf ornaments flanking the legend.

Reverse description The reverse is entirely composed of advertising text with no central pictorial device. The field carries the legend SHEET BRASS / PLATED METAL / & / GOLD PLATE in multiple lines across the center, while the peripheral legend reads GILT BUTTONS OF EVERY DESCRIPTION running around the border, with a small floral ornament as a stop. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded rim.
