Henry I's monetary reform of 1125 was brutal by any measure: the king summoned all of England's moneyers to Winchester at Christmas and, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, had them mutilated — hands struck off, eyes put out — as punishment for producing underweight and debased coin. The Quadrilateral on cross fleury type emerged from the tightly policed minting regime that followed, making it one of the more honestly struck issues of the Norman period.
Halfpennies of any Anglo-Norman type are considerably scarcer than pennies, since cutting pennies in half remained common practice for small transactions.
