| Beschrijving voorzijde | This halfpenny, produced by cutting a penny in half along a diameter, displays on its surviving portion the crowned bust of King Æthelstan facing right in the Anglo-Saxon hammered tradition. The royal effigy is depicted wearing a diadem or crown, rendered in the schematic, angular style characteristic of early tenth-century English die-cutting. The surrounding Latin legend reads + ÆÐELSTΛN REX, partially preserved along the arc of the cut edge, with letter forms including the Anglo-Saxon eth (Ð) and lambda-form A typical of the period. A beaded or plain inner border frames the design. The flan, now reduced to a roughly semicircular shape, shows the typical surface texture of a hammered silver coin with natural toning and wear consistent with circulation. |
