Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Martha Washington rendered in high relief, her hair dressed in an elaborate 18th-century coiffure with a cap, occupying the central field. The legend VIRGINIA arcs across the upper periphery, while the name MARTHA WASHINGTON appears in two lines to the right of the effigy in the lower field. The commemorative date 1759—the year of her marriage to George Washington—is inscribed in the exergue below the bust. A faint architectural outline, suggestive of Mount Vernon's colonnaded facade, is visible in the right background field.
