Fribourg's late 17th-century Guldiners were struck against a backdrop of persistent financial strain following the Thirty Years' War, which — though the Swiss Confederation avoided direct involvement — devastated trade networks and drove coin hoarding across the region. The city relied on its mercenary export revenues to sustain minting operations, and these heavy silver pieces functioned partly as prestige objects, circulating among merchants and officials rather than in daily trade.
