Obverse description Standing full-length figure of Saint John the Baptist, nimbate, facing front and holding a long cross, depicted in the Gothic style characteristic of late 14th-century Rhenish gold coinage. The saint divides the encircling Latin legend, which reads REInALDVS De IVLIA I GL, identifying the issuing duke. A lion mintmark appears at the terminus of the legend, serving as a localizing device within the field.
