Charles of Egmont spent nearly his entire reign at war — first to reclaim Guelders from Hapsburg control after his father Adolf was killed fighting Charles the Bold in 1477, then to hold it against the relentless pressure of the young Emperor Charles V. He succeeded in both for decades, making Guelders the last significant territory to resist incorporation into the Burgundian Netherlands. These gulden were struck across that long contest, funding a duchy that existed largely through French subsidy and sheer dynastic stubbornness.
Charles died without a legitimate heir in 1538, and Guelders passed to William of Cleves — then to Charles V within five years anyway.
