Reverse description A crowned shield bearing the quartered arms of Gelderland is superimposed upon a short floriated cross, the arms of which terminate in stylised floral or trefoil flourishes. The field is decorated with punctuation marks in the form of annulets and saltires, typical of the ornamental vocabulary of late medieval Low Countries gold coinage. The circumferential legend in Gothic lettering reads MON NOVA AVREA DVCIS GELR, declaring this to be the new gold coin of the Duchy of Guelders. A decorative cross or mullet serves as the initial mark. The entire device is contained within a beaded inner circle.
