Obverse description Three-quarter armored bust of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II facing right, wearing an imperial crown and elaborately decorated plate armor, holding an orb surmounted by a cross in his right hand. The portrait is rendered in a bold Renaissance style with fine detailing on the armor. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, interrupted at the top by the word REX. The field is flat with no inner border.

Reverse description Crowned double-headed imperial eagle displayed, with wings spread, bearing on its breast a large quartered shield of the Habsburg arms combining the arms of Austria, Burgundy, Bohemia, and other hereditary territories. The date appears in the upper field, flanked by the eagle's heads beneath the imperial crown. A continuous Latin legend surrounds the entire design, reading the titular styles of Maximilian II as Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, and Margrave of Moravia.
