Ferdinand I authorized this denomination as part of broader efforts to standardize coinage across the Habsburg hereditary lands, where a chaotic proliferation of local issues had made exchange rates a persistent administrative headache. The 60 Kreuzer struck at Kuttenberg drew on the town's proximity to the Joachimsthal silver trade routes, though the Kuttenberg mint itself had been working Bohemian silver since the great Přemyslid mining boom of the thirteenth century.
The three-year window of production — closing before Ferdinand's death in 1564 — keeps surviving examples relatively scarce compared to the longer-running issues from Prague or Vienna.
