Beschrijving keerzijde A crown is depicted centrally in the field, surrounded by the continuous Latin legend. The date appears below the crown, positioned within the inner line of the legend, a distinctive feature of this issue. The design is compact and well-centred, befitting the small module of the one-third guinea denomination. The legend runs continuously around the crown in a circular arrangement, enclosed between two linear borders near the milled edge.

Aanvullende informatie

The 1/3 guinea denomination was revived in 1797 specifically to address a professional fee problem: guineas had long been the unit of account for doctors, lawyers, and other professionals, but no convenient fractional coin existed for smaller consultations and settlements. The denomination had last appeared under George II and was brought back under pressure from the medical profession in particular, who found shillings an awkward substitute.

Production ran only three years before the denomination was quietly abandoned — too small in diameter to handle comfortably and too limited in purchasing range to fill a genuine commercial gap.
