Obverse description Central device features a large, boldly rendered fleur-de-lis occupying most of the field, its petals heavily crosshatched in the Gothic manner typical of Flemish gold coinage of the 14th century. The fleur-de-lis rises from a stylized foliate base, with rounded lobes flanking a central projecting petal capped by a small globe or bud. The surrounding circular legend, struck in uncial Gothic lettering, reads L.FLAND COMES, identifying Louis as Count of Flanders. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border, and the flan exhibits the characteristic irregularity of hammered medieval gold coinage.
