Reverse description Frontal crowned bust of the Volto Santo — the sacred face of Christ venerated at Lucca — depicted wearing a crown and turned slightly to the left, rendered in a stylized medieval manner with elongated facial features and a suggestion of drapery at the shoulders. The effigy is contained within a beaded inner circle, with the surrounding field bearing a circular Latin legend identifying the sacred image. The overall execution is characteristic of late 14th-century Lucchese hammered coinage, with bold if somewhat crude relief typical of the period.
