Florence's monetary system in the early fourteenth century was built around the florin, but the grosso filled a critical gap in everyday commercial transactions that gold could not practically serve. The "Popolino" designation reflects the political dominance of the *Popolo* — the merchant guilds — following their suppression of magnate power in the late thirteenth century, and the saplings motif is directly tied to that factional identity rather than dynastic imagery.
The seven-year window of this issue coincides with a period of sharp internal conflict between the Black and White Guelph factions, the latter's expulsion from Florence occurring in 1302 — just four years before striking began.
