The Carrarino takes its name from the Carrara dynasty, which seized control of Padua in 1318 and spent the better part of the fourteenth century fighting off the Scaligeri of Verona. James II — Giacomo II da Carrara — ruled for only a few years before his assassination in 1350, almost certainly arranged by his own cousin Giacomo III. Issues from his brief lordship are consequently scarce, produced within a narrow window of political instability that saw Padua's mint output heavily influenced by competing north Italian monetary systems, particularly Venetian standards.
