Lucca's medieval coinage occupied a peculiar legal fiction for longer than almost any other Italian commune. The city continued striking silver grossi in the name of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV decades after his death in 1218 and his earlier excommunication by Innocent III — a convenient political anchor that kept Lucca's money credible across Tuscany without requiring allegiance to any living ruler. By the 1250s this formula had outlasted two further emperors. The square E variant in the imperial name is a die-characteristic used by specialists to sequence this emission within the broader Otto series.
