Obverse description Within a central beaded inner circle, a crowned eagle displayed with wings spread and head turned to sinister, rendered in bold relief characteristic of north Italian medieval die-cutting. The eagle, emblem of the Commune of Piacenza, is depicted with elaborately feathered wings and talons spread. Surrounding the inner circle, a circular legend in Gothic uncial lettering reads PLACENTIA, separated by pellets, running between the inner beaded border and the irregular flan edge.
