The Trivulzio were a Milanese noble family who acquired Mesocco and its valley in 1483, holding it as a semi-independent lordship wedged between Swiss confederate expansion and Milanese political instability. Johann Franz — Gian Giacomo's grandson — ruled during the period when the Graubünden leagues were pressing hard for full absorption of the Mesolcina. The valley was ultimately sold to the Grey Leagues in 1549, the same year this type ceases, ending Trivulzio coinage entirely.
