Francis Maria I della Rovere's tenure as Duke of Urbino was anything but stable — he was stripped of the duchy by Pope Leo X in 1516 and spent years in military exile before recovering it by force in 1521. Coins struck under his name therefore span two discontinuous periods of actual rule, and attributing a specific piece to either reign without supporting die evidence is genuinely difficult.
The ⅔ grosso denomination itself reflects the fractional silver accounting common to small north-central Italian courts, where local trade demanded subdivisions that larger powers simply minted around.
