Francesco I of France acquired Milan in September 1515 following his decisive victory at Marignano — one of the most celebrated engagements of the Italian Wars — and held the duchy until Sforza forces, backed by the Habsburgs, expelled the French in 1521. This grosso belongs entirely to that seven-year window of French dominion over the city. The MIR and Crippa references place it within a small series of silver struck under French authority at the Milan mint, a facility the French kept operational largely to legitimize their occupation through coinage.
