Obverse description Central field features a large Gothic letter N in high relief, flanked by four large globules at the cardinal points, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The N is rendered in a bold, slightly archaic Gothic style characteristic of 13th-century Italian episcopal coinage. Surrounding the beaded circle, the circular legend reads in Latin, with the letter S depicted recumbent or lying on its side as a distinctive die characteristic. The overall design conveys the episcopal authority of Bishop Nicolo Maltraversi of Reggio Emilia.
