Bailardino of Nogarole served as imperial vicar of Vicenza under the authority of the Scaligeri of Verona, and the Grosso Aquilino issued under his name reflects the city's brief moment of semi-autonomous coinage before Visconti dominance reshaped the entire Lombard monetary order. Vicenza's minting rights during this window were precarious — the city had passed through Ezzelino's tyranny, communal revival, and successive lordships within living memory of these coins' striking.
