The shield is set within an ornate six-lobed (hexilobe) gothic frame formed by pointed cusps. A Gothic Latin legend encircles the design in the outer field, beginning at the position of the crossed swords: KAROLVS: DVX: LOThOR`: ET: MAR`, identifying Charles as Duke of Lorraine and Marquis. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hammered medieval coinage. |

The lettering is rendered in Gothic script typical of late 14th- to early 15th-century Lorraine coinage, with the legends separated by a beaded border. |
