Reverse description A rampant lion passant to the left occupies the central field, rendered in a bold, stylised Gothic manner with a crown above its head and foliate or trefoil ornaments surrounding the figure, filling the inner circle. The lion, emblematic of the Plantagenet dynasty and its Gascon lordship, is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential legend in uncial Latin letters identifies the issuing mint. The flan is irregular and the relief somewhat flat, consistent with hammered production at the La Rochelle mint during the reign of Edward III.
