Obverse description Central field displays the heraldic shield of Basel — a black crozier on a white ground — set within a cusped Gothic quatrefoil frame with raised lobed borders. The shield is rendered in fine relief typical of mid-15th-century Swiss hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding circular legend. The Gothic uncial legend reads +·GROSSVS·BASILIENSIS·, identifying the denomination and city of issue, punctuated by pellet stops.

Additional information

Basel's 1433 Groschen was struck during a particularly consequential moment for the city: the Council of Basel, one of the most contentious ecclesiastical councils of the medieval period, had been in session since 1431 and would drag on until 1449. The city's mint was under pressure to produce credible coinage for an influx of ecclesiastical dignitaries, legates, and merchants from across Europe. The VITA DULCEDO type takes its motto — "sweetness of life" — from a Marian antiphon, a pointed assertion of civic piety in a city hosting a council that came close to deposing a sitting pope.
