Obverse description Frontal enthroned figure of Charlemagne (Carolus Magnus), depicted as Holy Roman Emperor, wearing a crown and imperial robes. He holds a sceptre or staff surmounted by an eagle in his right hand and an orb or model of a church in his left, referencing his legendary association with the city of Aachen. The figure is rendered in a stylised Gothic manner characteristic of late 14th-century Rhenish coinage. The field is plain, and the design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A Latin legend surrounds the effigy reading +KAROLVS MAGnVS InPERLT.
