| Additional information |
Basel struck this groschen in 1433 during a period of extraordinary political significance for the city: the Council of Basel, one of the most consequential ecclesiastical assemblies of the fifteenth century, was in full session from 1431 to 1449. The influx of prelates, diplomats, and merchants created real monetary pressure, and the city's mint responded with increased output to meet local exchange demands that the existing coinage could not adequately handle.
The HMZ 2#52a designation places this among the earliest documented Basel groschen of this type.
