Obverse description Within a plain inner circle, a lion passant guardant faces left in high relief, rendered in the bold Romanesque style characteristic of 13th-century Italian coinage. The lion stands on a ground line, its tail raised and curling over its back, with a fleur-de-lis visible above. A beaded inner border separates the central type from the surrounding legend. The circular legend reads + CAROLVS REX SENATOR VRBI, divided by a cross at the top, with the lettering in Gothic majuscule characters between the beaded and outer borders.
