Reverse description Within a plain inner circle, a crowned figure of Charles I of Anjou is depicted enthroned facing, robed in regal garments and holding a sceptre in the right hand, the left hand resting on the knee or holding an orb, in the hieratic frontal style typical of medieval Italian senatorial coinage. The throne is flanked by armrests, and a palm frond appears to the left of the figure. A beaded inner border encloses the central type, while the surrounding circular legend reads + ROMA CAPVD MVNDI S. P. Q. R. in Gothic majuscule script between beaded borders, invoking Rome's universal authority.
