Louis of Villars held the joint bishopric of Valence and Die during a period when the Dauphiné was being absorbed into French royal administration — the Dauphin Charles, soon to be Charles V, had taken formal possession of the region in 1349. Episcopal minting rights in the Dauphiné were contested and increasingly squeezed by that transfer of political authority, making coinage from this period a direct artifact of ecclesiastical resistance to encroaching royal prerogative.
