Guy IV ruled Saint-Pol during a period when French feudal lords were under mounting pressure from Philip IV to conform their coinage to royal monetary standards. The Elincourt mint was one of several seigneurial operations that Philip repeatedly attempted to suppress or absorb during his aggressive campaign to consolidate French monetary authority in the early fourteenth century. Whether this groschen was struck in defiance or under temporary royal tolerance is difficult to say with precision — the chronology of Philip's interventions against minor northern lords shifts frequently across the documentary record.
