Obverse description Two adjacent heraldic shields in the field: the left bearing the quartered arms of Anhalt, the right displaying the arms of Aschersleben. A looped suspension hanger appears above the shields, and a lily ornament is positioned below. The overall composition is characteristic of early sixteenth-century German hammered coinage, with the shields rendered in a flat, stylized heraldic manner.

Additional information

Ernest I, Rudolf IV, and Wolfgang ruled Anhalt jointly under the co-regency arrangements that defined Ascanian succession politics — partition and reunion cycling through generations as brothers divided and recombined territories. This half-groschen was struck during a narrow window of their collective rule before the principality fragmented again. The Saxon groschen standard, to which this piece conforms, had dominated central German small silver since the Meissen reforms of the fourteenth century, and Anhalt's minor mints operated firmly within that orbit.
