John II struck this issue while a prisoner of the English crown following his capture at Poitiers in 1356 — one of the most consequential defeats in French medieval history. The coinage decisions of this period fell to his son, the future Charles V, governing as regent under the title Dauphin. The billon content reflects the fiscal catastrophe of funding a ransom set at three million gold écus, a sum that would cripple French royal finances for years.
