Jean l'Aveugle — John the Blind — ruled Luxembourg from 1309 until his death at Crécy in 1346, where, famously blind for over a decade, he ordered his knights to lead him into the French cavalry charge so he could strike at least one blow. He died in the melee. The Black Prince reportedly adopted his crest and motto, *Ich dien*, afterward.
This gros belongs to a reign defined more by military adventurism than domestic administration — John was absent from Luxembourg for years at a stretch, campaigning across Bohemia, Poland, and France. The coinage reflects his dual status as both Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia, a dynastic position acquired through his 1310 marriage to Elisabeth of Bohemia.
