Theobald of Bar served as Prince-Bishop of Liège from 1303 to 1312, and this imitative gros tournois belongs to the wave of ecclesiastical copies that swept the Low Countries after Philip IV of France's royal tournois gained wide commercial acceptance. Ecclesiastical mints throughout the region — Liège, Cambrai, Huy — struck their own versions, exploiting both the coin's trusted weight standard and its familiarity to merchants.
The Thuin attribution places production at the chapter's mint in that town rather than Liège proper, a distinction that matters for die-study purposes given Dengis's differentiation of the series.
