Obverse description Central field bearing a plain cross pattee within a raised beaded inner circle. An intermediate legend band carries the royal inscription + PHILIPPVS REX, separated from an outer devotional legend by a second beaded border. The outer legend reads + BNDICTV: SIT: HOME: DHI: NRI: DEI: IHV: XPI, a Biblical benediction standard to the Gros Tournois type. The entire design is enclosed within a plain outer rim. The hammered fabric produces a characteristic irregular flan typical of late 13th-century French royal coinage.
