Henri VII of Luxembourg issued these coins during his reign as Count before his elevation as Holy Roman Emperor-elect in 1308 — a political ascent that would ultimately end with his death in Buonconvento in 1313, allegedly by poison, though likely malaria. The gros tournois type he adopted was a direct copy of the French royal standard established under Louis IX, a deliberate monetary policy choice that leveraged the tournois's already wide acceptance in cross-border trade along the Meuse and Rhine corridors.
Weiller's classification separates several die variants within this type; the L#28-1 reference places this piece among the earlier emissions of the series.
