| Obverse description | Central fleur-de-lys surmounted by a royal crown, set within a trefoil polylobed inner circle; the spandrels of the polylobes are adorned with small roses. The entire motif is rendered in the characteristic Gothic style of mid-14th-century French royal coinage. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the outer legend. The Latin legend, reading clockwise, names King John II of France by divine grace. |

| Reverse description | A bold plain cross pattée divides the field into four quarters, each canton containing an upright fleur-de-lys, the emblematic device of the French monarchy. The cross is contained within a double beaded circular border. The surrounding Latin legend, an abbreviated devotional benediction invoking the name of Jesus Christ, runs clockwise between the inner and outer beaded borders. The reverse design epitomizes the standard Capetian-Valois gros type of the period. |
