正面描述 Central long cross with a small ringlet positioned above the upper arm, dividing the field into four quarters. The cross is rendered in a bold, plain style characteristic of mid-14th-century Anglo-French feudal coinage. An outer circular legend in uncial Latin script reads HEN COmES LANC BNDICTV SIT nOmE DnI, referencing Henry as Count of Lancaster and invoking a devotional formula. The legend is enclosed between two concentric circles forming an inner and outer border. The flan is irregular in shape, consistent with hammered production.

附加信息

Henry of Lancaster held Bergerac as an English-controlled lordship during one of the most turbulent stretches of the Hundred Years' War, and these issues were struck in the years immediately following the Black Death's first sweep through Aquitaine — a demographic catastrophe that killed perhaps a third of the local population and severely disrupted regional commerce. That coins were being struck at all reflects the pressure to maintain functional exchange in a collapsing economy. Lancaster himself was one of the most capable commanders of the period, and Bergerac changed hands repeatedly; French forces had retaken the town as recently as 1345 before Edward III's campaigns restored English control.
