| Obverse description | Central cross with a six-pointed star ornament positioned at the 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock quarters of the cross arms. An inner circular legend reads + IOHANNES (lozenge) DEI (lozenge) GRA, identifying the issuing monarch John II of France. An outer circular legend carries the devotional inscription + BNDICTV: SIT: NOME: DNI: NRI: IHV: XPI, punctuated by groups of three superimposed dots. The design is characteristic of the elaborate Gothic billon coinage of the Valois period. |
