Gilbert of Bronckhorst-Batenburg acquired Anholt around 1420, and this groot — struck just a few years into his tenure — belongs to a moment when minor Rhineland and Guelders-adjacent lordships were aggressively asserting coinage rights to fund local governance and military obligations. The "tourse" type derives from the French gros tournois tradition, by then over a century old, still being imitated across the Low Countries long after the original Capetian model had ceased production.
Anholt's output from this period was small by any measure, and surviving examples are rarely encountered outside regional Dutch and German collections.
