The helmet is elaborately decorated with mantling that fills the field on both sides. The design is executed in high relief typical of late medieval hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle borders the central device, with the episcopal legend running in uncial lettering around the outer circumference. |

Frederik van Blankenheim held the See of Utrecht for three decades, an unusually stable episcopate for a territory constantly pressured by Holland, Guelders, and the Hanseatic cities. His administration coincided with the Schism period, when competing papal obediences complicated every ecclesiastical appointment in the Low Countries. The groot was Utrecht's workhorse trade denomination, circulating alongside Flemish and Brabantine issues in the Rhine delta markets.
Dies for Utrecht episcopal coinage of this period were often cut by craftsmen shared with neighboring secular mints — attribution of specific workshop hands remains unresolved in the literature.
