John of Arkel held the see of Liège from 1364 until his death in 1378, navigating the chronic friction between episcopal authority and the powerful guilds of Liège that would eventually erupt into open revolt under his successors. This groat type belongs to a narrow three-year window when his monetary policy leaned heavily on the Saint Peter attribution — a deliberate invocation of apostolic authority at a moment when his temporal grip on the prince-bishopric was anything but secure.
