John of Arkel held the Prince-Bishopric of Liège from 1364 until his death in 1378, a tenure defined largely by his ruinous financial conflicts with the city of Liège itself. The burghers repeatedly refused subsidies, and the bishop's chronic insolvency almost certainly drove debasement decisions across his coinage — though this issue at .900 fine represents one of his better-quality strikes.
Dengis 567 is among the less commonly encountered Arkel types in the market, the Liège mint output for this period being irregular and tied directly to the bishop's access to bullion.
