Engelbert de la Marck ruled the Prince-bishopric of Liège from 1345 until his death in 1364, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the city of Liège itself and the ever-present pressure of competing territorial ambitions in the Meuse valley. Dinant, the issuing mint here, operated as a distinct commercial center under episcopal authority — copper and brass working dominated the town's economy, but silver coinage was struck there when political circumstances demanded a local assertion of minting rights.
The eagle type draws on the heraldry of the de la Marck family rather than purely episcopal iconography, a deliberate conflation of dynastic and ecclesiastical authority that characterized how Engelbert governed.
