| Obverse description | Draped and crowned bust of Alfonso II facing left, depicted in a Gothic style with elaborate jewelled crown and ornate robes decorated with pellets. The effigy is contained within an inner beaded circle, with the royal legend disposed around the field between two concentric beaded borders. The portrait is rendered in a bold, high-relief hammered style characteristic of late 13th-century Catalan coinage. |

Alfonso II of Catalonia — known as "the Liberal" — inherited the Crown of Aragon in 1285 under immediate military pressure, with French forces invading Catalonia in support of the Angevin claim to Sicily following the Sicilian Vespers. His reign was consumed by that conflict, and the groat issues of this period reflect a functioning mint operation maintained through sustained wartime stress. The Cru. 331 type is relatively scarce in fine condition, as much of this silver likely circulated hard through a kingdom perpetually mobilizing troops and paying ransoms.
